Kaibab

Turkey Vulture. Cathartes aura.

Kaibab hatched in spring of 2021 and was born with a congenital defect that affected the growth of his right wing. This defect resulted in no bones or plumage past his humerus bone. Missing a large portion of his right wing prevents him from flying and he was deemed an education ambassador after thorough assessment. Kai joined the NWBR team in September of 2022. He works alongside our staff as an Education Ambassador to inform the Northwest Arkansas community on the special qualities of Turkey Vultures and their importance in our environment.

Kai is active during the day and is always curious about his surroundings and his trainers. He is named after the South Kaibab Trail in Grand Canyon National Park, a trail Dr. Emily Warman and Madison Kennedy were able to hike together. Kaibab loves rabbit days, where he can poke the eyeballs of his prey. Kai is so trusting with his trainers and always ready to work with us!

Facts About Turkey Vultures

There are twenty-three species of Vultures and they are divided into two groups: New World Vultures and the Old World Vultures. Turkey Vultures are in the New World group and found in the Americas.

Vultures have bald, featherless heads and necks. This adaptation keeps carrion from sticking to their feathers while eating, allowing them to remain as clean as possible!

Vultures "sun," fully extending their wings out, to absorb the sunlight. The UV rays clean, dry, and warm their feathers.

Vultures' stomachs have the acidity level similar to battery acid. Because of this, vultures can digest viruses like Rabies and Anthrax.
